Nagihan Seymour is a British-Turkish artist specialising in Tezhip, miniature painting, and Iznik ceramics. She draws on Istanbul's heritage, blending traditional motifs with modern elements. Mohammed Abu Zaid is a Moroccan calligrapher, visual artist and professor of graphic design, specialising in Moroccan Kufic script and Islamic ornamentation whose works are published by the Center for Islamic Arts in Kuwait.  

Alongside a short historical presentation, this workshop will be a practical educational workshop in which participants will learn about Almoravid Kufic script, including its structural proportions, unit of measurement, and letter balance in wirting the Arabic word for "peace".

Haji Noor Deen Mi Guang Jiang is a world-renowned master of Arabic calligraphy whose work uniquely fuses Chinese and Arabic artistic traditions. In 1997, he became the first Chinese calligrapher awarded the prestigious Certificate of Arabic Calligraphy in Egypt, and in 2017 received an Ijaza from leading Ottoman calligraphy masters in Istanbul.

In his session, he will provide an introduction and historical details of how Chinese Muslim recoded the Holy Quran through Chinese style Arabic scripts with a look at the tools, followed by a live demonstration of how to write the script.

Reclaiming Kufi: A Deeper Understanding for More Rooted Creation

Joumana Medlej is an artist-scholar from Lebanon. She found Kufi scripts, assisting master Samir Sayegh in his Beirut studio, later spending nearly 20 years studying and reconstructing misunderstood scripts of early Arabic calligraphy. She teaches Kufi calligraphy at the Arab British Centre and has lectured at Stanford University, Oxford, Cambridge, the Gulbenkian Foundation and other institutions.

Based on 2 decades of research and practice, her session will reset in our understanding of Kufi. She’ll describe how this tradition came to be, how it differs from the later round scripts, what makes it a coherent family despite its immense diversity, sharing general principles and how it can be a strong basis for contemporary creation.

Egyptian Islamic Geometric Artist and Graphic Designer who is passionate about preserving and promoting the rich artistic traditions of Islamic Design and unveiling the mesmerizing symmetries and harmonies of geometric patterns through modern applications.

His session will be a focused on the 12 and 6-point rosette motif from the Sultan al-Ghuri minbar in Cairo. What is Islamic Art Week?

Islamic Art Week is a global annual celebration of Islamic Art.  It is founded by the Global Centre of Islamic Art (GCIA). Islamic Art Week happens over 7 days usually the 3rd week of November which coincides with The International Day of Islamic Art that was coined by UNESCO to be held on the 18th of November every year.

It is a week to experience the beauty, magic and transformation of Islamic Art on every level individual, family, community, organisation, country and global level.

What happens during Islamic Art week?

We will hold 35+ workshops that cover everything about Islamic Art from Islamic Geometry to Applied Islamic Art and more.
